Johann Kattus

The history of the Kattus company began in 1857 when Johann Kattus founded a grocery at am Hof 8 in Vienna. Initially he carried mainly wine, coffee, tea, tropical fruits, spirits and champagne. Soon he added caviar to his assortment of wares. Kattus opened a trading station along the Caspian Sea in Astrakhan, acting as a supplier of what was then called "black gold" to the imperial courts in Vienna and Saint Petersburg. Kattus also forged ties very early on with the champagne producer Veuve Clicquot in Reims. In fact, this business relationship has existed for more than 140 years.

Hochriegl
The company's own sparkling wine production operations were started by the founder's son Johann Nepomuk Kattus in 1890. He created the Hochriegl brand, named after his best vineyard. Hochriegl Sekt has since become the mainstay of company business.
